PRACTICAL LIFE
Practical Life is the foundation of a Primary Montessori experience. It is through the purposeful work of dusting, polishing, baking and sewing that the child gains a strong sense of self-confidence and perfects coordination all while developing concentration, perseverance, sequencing and attention to detail. The sense of pride in the child's accomplishments of the meaningful activities lays the foundation for a love of learning.
SENSORIAL
The Sensorial Materials provide opportunities for experiencing the world through the senses. By comparing and sorting colors, textures, sounds, smells, shapes and sizes, the child is given the keys to understanding sensorial impressions. A foundation of language and mathematical concepts is strengthened through the child's practice and repetition of these beautiful materials. The isolation of quality allows the child to develop keen observation and comparison skills.
LANGUAGE
Language development permeates every area in a Primary Montessori environment. Both the environment and materials foster strong speaking, listening, writing and reading skills. Through the use of specific language such as "the acute angled isosceles triangle", "the gulf fritillary butterfly" or "the obcordate leaf shape", children are exposed to and absorb the richness of our language. Children learn the phonetic sound and formation of letters through visual, auditory and tactile materials providing a multi-sensory experience. A variety of materials prepare the hand for writing but we offer children the ability to write before their hand is ready. This concrete foundation is the base of the extraordinary Montessori Language curriculum.
MATH
The brilliance of the Primary Montessori math curriculum is the use of concrete materials to teach abstract concepts through a variety of materials. The child first develops an understanding of order and sequence of numbers followed by quantity and symbol. Through practice, the child gains a solid understanding of numbers and is able to work through the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
CULTURAL
Art, music, geography and science are carefully integrated into the whole learning experience at AMH. Children are introduced to a variety of art medias such as watercolors, pastels, pencils, sewing, and embroidery. Cultural lessons along with learning the corresponding geography allow children to gain an appreciation of the world they live in thereby raising true global citizens.
